What is the Professional Teaching Portfolio Challenge and how can it help me?

The Western Australian Department of Education's Strategic Plan for WA Public Schools 2016 - 2019 has identified as its second priority high quality teaching with key foci including:
  • An articulation of high expectations and standards of teacher performance through induction, professional learning and evaluation based on the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
  • An expectation of a proportion of teachers assessed as proficient against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
  • The extent to which  graduate teachers are supported to achieve proficiency against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers
Department of Education Western Australia (2015) Strategic Plan for WA Schools 2016 -2019. Department of Education. Perth. p6.

The Professional Teaching Portfolio Challenge is designed to support teachers in the creation of a professional portfolio and the collection of evidence to support their claim against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.  This website has evolved from the original AITSL for TLs Challenge and has been modified to support all teachers going through the accreditation process.
Participants who undertake the Challenge will be guided through a series of tasks designed to deconstruct the process of establishing  a professional teaching portfolio and collecting evidence to support the Standards. This will be done by:
  • Identifying the three different levels of performance appraisal required by teachers and providing resources to help address each level;
  • Identifying key components of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and providing guidance in understanding what each standard may look like and how evidence can be collected to address that standard; and
  • Assisting teachers in the development of a professional portfolio that reflects their growth as an educator.
The Challenges are self-paced so you can take as long as you like to complete them. The order is only a suggestion.
Schools may wish to use the Challenges as a way of planning their professional learning for staff (e.g. having all staff do a particular Challenge at the same time based on the school's priorities).
